KU women turn season around with two NCAA wins
BOULDER, Colo. — The Kansas Jayhawks aren’t about to complain about their No. 12 seeding.
After all, they realize they were likely the last at-large team to make the women’s NCAA Tournament after losing seven of their last 11 games.
They’re eager, however, to prove that they’re not your average 12th seed.
The Jayhawks (20-13) were the ones chanting “Sweet 16!” for the second straight season Monday night after senior Monica Engelman scored a career-high 27 points in a 75-69 upset of fourth-seeded South Carolina.
12th-seeded Kansas women whip Colorado in NCAA Tournament opener
BOULDER, Colo. — The Kansas Jayhawks still have Colorado’s number.
Angel Goodrich and Carolyn Davis each scored 14 points and the 12th-seeded Jayhawks upset their former conference foe and fifth-seeded Buffaloes 67-52 Saturday night on Colorado’s home floor.
The number the Jayhawks swear they aren’t the least bit concerned with is their seeding.
So, no, they don’t feel slighted that the selection committee made them a 12.
After all, they lost five of their last seven coming into the tournament: “We lost a lot of games down the stretch,” Davis said.
Roy’s 700th career win comes in a good place
KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The mannerisms were all familiar Friday, yet few in the Sprint Center seemed interested … or perturbed.
There was Roy Williams putting his glasses on and off as if he was adjusting from headlines to agate type.
And there Roy was bent over as if in some sort of gastric distress over a call.
And there Roy was saving timeouts like Indian head pennies.
Yet Williams may just as well have been Andy Enfield.
KU women make NCAA Tournament as No. 12 seed
LAWRENCE — Carolyn Davis leaned forward and then back. Fellow senior Angel Goodrich sat beside her perched forward the entire time with her hands crossed together as platform for her chin to rest on.
The two were in the second of three rows of Kansas players waiting to see what their future held. Would they make the NCAA Tournament?
The first teams were announced at 6:04 p.m., and knees began to bounce and feet began to twitch left and right, as the Jayhawks grew increasingly anxious to see their name.
Kevin Haskin: Year for the No. 16 seed? Not likely at KU’s expense
LAWRENCE — The 6th day of February was when fashionable overkill favoring prohibitive underdogs went viral.
Kansas triggered the sentiment. It lost at TCU.
What had been a mere whisper suddenly swelled into an uproar: This is the year a No. 16 seed beats a No. 1 in the NCAA Tournament!
Well, the time has come. The NCAA bracket was unveiled Sunday.
And, as fate would have it, Kansas was seeded on the 1-line.
“It’s going to happen, a 16 is going to beat a one. Eventually,’’ KU coach Bill Self said.
Kansas, K-State favored as Big 12 tourney opens
KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Kansas State and Kansas tied for the regular-season Big 12 title.
That doesn’t mean they feel very good about themselves entering the league tournament.
The Wildcats lost a road game against Oklahoma State on Saturday, while the Jayhawks were routed by Baylor a few hours later in a game that would have given them the outright title.
Consider it proof that the Big 12 Tournament, which starts Wednesday night at Sprint Center, promises to be among the most intriguing and unpredictable in conference history.
TCU fulfills dream with historic upset of KU
FORT WORTH, Texas — Garlon Green dreamed of a victory over Kansas long before he played for TCU.
It’s hard to think that the Horned Frogs senior forward or anyone else could have ever imagined his dream being fulfilled like this. The fifth-ranked Jayhawks certainly didn’t.
Big 12 newcomer TCU was still looking for its first conference victory and there were some who wondered if the Frogs, who have lost three key players to season-ending injuries, could become the first team to go winless in the league.
Tulsa starts anew with Danny Manning as coach

As a player, he experienced the best there is as an NCAA champion at Kansas and an NBA All-Star with the Los Angeles Clippers. He understands the worst there is, with three se… Continue reading
Austin Meek: Brown still game for college hoops
Larry Brown will speak honestly and say, at 71, he’s not in love with the games.
Brown has coached a million of them in what seems like a million places. He’s had more great basketball jobs than anyone, anywhere — Kansas and UCLA, the Knicks and … Continue reading
