ST. THOMAS, Virgin Islands — Guard Natalie Knight had a shot from 3-point range to tie Xavier in the waning seconds Friday but came up short as Kansas ultimately fell, 64-59.
The loss dropped the Jayhawks to 1-1 in play at the Paradise Jam tournament.
Guard CeCe Harper paced the KU attack with 15 points, a season-high 4 assists and 4 rebounds. Forward Chelsea Gardner added 12 points, 6 rebounds and 2 blocks despite playing only 18 minutes with foul trouble. Knight contributed 10 points, 2 assists and 2 blocked shots.
ST. THOMAS, U.S. Virgin Islands — The Kansas women’s basketball team rallied from an early double-digit deficit Thursday afternoon to top Central Michigan 68-63 in the first game of the US. Virginia Islands Paradise Jam.
Down 14-3 less than six minutes into the game, the Jayhawks (4-1) tied the game up at half 32-all before taking the game in the final 20 minutes.
Markisha Hawkins led KU with career highs in points (16) and assists (four), while Chelsea Gardner also added 16 points and 14 boards. Natalie Knight had 10 points and a six rebounds.

Kansas offensive line coach Tim Grunhard will step down from the team’s coaching staff at the conclusion of Jayhawks’ season, the team confirmed in a news release Wednesday night.
Coach Charlie Weis said Grunhard’s replacement has already been hired and the team will provide more details at a later time.
“Tim Grunhard and I had prepared a joint statement concerning his future that we intended to release on Sunday after the Kansas State game,” Weis said in the release. “We were trying to avoid being any distraction.”

LAWRENCE — A day after committing to play at Kansas, Cliff Alexander made it official. The 6-foot-8 power forward ranked as Rivals.com’s No. 4 overall player in the 2014 class officially signed his national letter of intent, KU athletics announced Saturday.
Mike McCormack, one of the finest offensive linemen in the University of Kansas’ history who went on to become a Pro Football Hall of Fame player and builder of successful NFL franchises, died Friday. He was 83.
McCormack, called “the finest offensive lineman I have ever coached’’ by NFL coaching legend Paul Brown during McCormack’s 1984 Hall of Fame induction, died at his home in Palm Desert, Calif.
