Lots of quarterback changes in Big 12 this fall

The Big 12 is facing an identity crisis at quarterback, with a lot of different players preparing to take snaps this fall.

Seven of the league’s 10 teams had senior quarterbacks, providing for a lot of changes during spring practice.

“With new QBs, there are always question marks. I mean, you don’t really know until you know,” Baylor coach Art Briles said Tuesday. “The only way to know is to get out on the field with them in the heat of battle and find out how they respond. Yeah, it changes the dynamics of the league 100 percent.”

Kevin Haskin: Rebuilding Jayhawks head to Big 12 tourney

LAWRENCE — The Kansas golf team could not go into the Big 12 Golf Championships with much greater momentum.

The Jayhawks are coming off their first team title since 2010 after claiming the Hawkeye Invitational earlier this month in Iowa City, Iowa.

That breakthrough, however, was nothing first-year coach Jamie Bermel championed as an immediate goal.

Kevin Haskin: New homestretch good for Kansas Relays

LAWRENCE — The concept for the Gridiron Club is dead.

Sheahon Zenger officially killed the proposed addition to the east side of Memorial Stadium shortly after taking over as Kansas athletic director.

Yet in a sense, Zenger facilitated his own, more sensible, stadium makeover with the development of Rock Chalk Park.

Nothing is official yet. The groundbreaking, however, was unofficially conducted this weekend at the 86th Kansas Relays.

Quartet of seniors highlights KU basketball banquet

LAWRENCE — The 2012-13 Kansas basketball team stood together in a ballroom full of flashing light bulbs and clapping hands.

It may be the last time they’re all in the same room.

As the applause began to lower in volume, Kansas coach Bill Self commanded this group for, what may also be, the last time.

“Everybody have a seat except our four seniors,” Self requested. “This may be the last time they have a chance to thank everybody.”

KU’s Weis ‘encouraged’ by Heaps’ performance

LAWRENCE — Before we all get too carried away, it’s worth noting that a year ago at Kansas’ spring game, some guy named Dayne Crist looked pretty sharp, too.

Despite numerous similarities, albeit with much more reasonable expectations, Jake Heaps showed he is not Dayne Crist — or as much as he could, anyway, in a meaningless game in April.

That’s not to say Heaps did anything to lessen the hopes that he’ll provide the Jayhawks with some much-needed stability, if not an actual playmaking threat, at quarterback.

Jayhawks pick up rare series win against OSU

LAWRENCE — His teammates wouldn’t dare bother him. Especially before the ninth inning.

KU closer Jordan Piché sat alone in the dugout before preparing himself for one more inning to finish off No. 19 Oklahoma State.

“I just told myself,” Piché said, “it stops here.”

Piché was successful, as the (18-12, 5-4) Jayhawks beat the (22-8, 4-4) Cowboys 3-2 on Sunday, to win the weekend series 2-1. It was KU’s first series win over a ranked team since the Jayhawks finished the series against No. 21 Baylor on April 3, 2011.

KU women turn season around with two NCAA wins

BOULDER, Colo. — The Kansas Jayhawks aren’t about to complain about their No. 12 seeding.

After all, they realize they were likely the last at-large team to make the women’s NCAA Tournament after losing seven of their last 11 games.

They’re eager, however, to prove that they’re not your average 12th seed.

The Jayhawks (20-13) were the ones chanting “Sweet 16!” for the second straight season Monday night after senior Monica Engelman scored a career-high 27 points in a 75-69 upset of fourth-seeded South Carolina.

12th-seeded Kansas women whip Colorado in NCAA Tournament opener

BOULDER, Colo. — The Kansas Jayhawks still have Colorado’s number.

Angel Goodrich and Carolyn Davis each scored 14 points and the 12th-seeded Jayhawks upset their former conference foe and fifth-seeded Buffaloes 67-52 Saturday night on Colorado’s home floor.

The number the Jayhawks swear they aren’t the least bit concerned with is their seeding.

So, no, they don’t feel slighted that the selection committee made them a 12.

After all, they lost five of their last seven coming into the tournament: “We lost a lot of games down the stretch,” Davis said.
