12th-seeded Kansas women whip Colorado in NCAA Tournament opener

BOULDER, Colo. — The Kansas Jayhawks still have Colorado’s number.

Angel Goodrich and Carolyn Davis each scored 14 points and the 12th-seeded Jayhawks upset their former conference foe and fifth-seeded Buffaloes 67-52 Saturday night on Colorado’s home floor.

The number the Jayhawks swear they aren’t the least bit concerned with is their seeding.

So, no, they don’t feel slighted that the selection committee made them a 12.

After all, they lost five of their last seven coming into the tournament: “We lost a lot of games down the stretch,” Davis said.

Camo, neon aren’t college basketball fan favorites

NEW YORK — It seems an unpopular position in college basketball is fashion forward.

The neon-colored jerseys and camouflage-covered shorts debuted by six teams in their postseason conference championships ahead of the NCAA men’s basketball tournaments weren’t well received in the press or social media, with critics particularly targeting UCLA, Kansas and Notre Dame because of the schools’ tradition-rich athletic histories. Louisville, Cincinnati and Baylor also got uniform makeovers from Adidas, and they didn’t go over so well, either.

KU freshman Ellis explodes for career-high 23 points

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — With four minutes and forty seconds left in Perry Ellis’ career game, Naadir Tharpe looked to throw an entry pass to his smoldering hot freshman.

But the freshman was wise enough to know it wouldn’t end well.

“No, no , no,” Ellis yelled.

Tharpe obliged and swung the ball to Travis Releford on the wing. A few seconds later, Tharpe was in the same situation. But this time Ellis had position and Tharpe had a passing lane.

Ellis the best of KU’s bigs vs. Baylor

WACO, Texas – Bill Self called Perry Ellis the best player on the floor for Kansas on Saturday, which was both a compliment and an indictment.

Ellis, a freshman forward from Wichita, scored 12 points and went 5-for-7 from the floor in KU’s 81-58 loss at Baylor. The Jayhawks needed him, too, after starter Kevin Young picked up two fouls in the first four minutes.

“He was aggressive,” Self said. “He attacked them. The guys he was scoring on or over or around were legitimate shot blockers that were much bigger.”

KU women win on senior night

LAWRENCE — From an outsiders perspective, it would seem that a two-point performance from Angel Goodrich on senior night would be disappointing.

Most outsiders don’t quite understand the player that Goodrich really is.

“It’s fitting,” Bonnie Henrickson said.

Never one for stats outside of assists and turnovers, Goodrich was more than content with her 12 assists and three errant plays Tuesday night as the 17-12 (8-10 Big 12) Jayhawks beat TCU 74-67.

Kevin Haskin: Letting all refs in on action proper move

Musings at the mid-week:

■ Thanks to everyone for the cards and letters regarding basketball officiating in the Big 12.

■ Well, whatever the correspondence is called in this electronic media world we chatter in.

■ Of all the conclusions, suggestions and allegations, one of the soundest was to be willing to assign any official working in the Big 12 to any game.

■ This would be poorly received by coaches, who have their favorites, but hey, one way to get refs to improve is to believe in them.

■ Watching the same guys work night-in, night-out, gets tiresome.
