Lawrence approves sports complex that will include KU facilities
LAWRENCE — Lawrence city commissioners have approved agreements for a city-owned recreation center and tax abatements for a larger project that will include athletic facilities for The University of Kansas.

And they approved an ordinance to give a 100 percent property tax abatement for the next 10 years for the larger project, which includes privately owned athletic facilities for the university.
ESPN GameDay crew films show in Allen Fieldhouse
LAWRENCE — On Jan. 22, 1974, Digger Phelps brought No. 1-ranked Notre Dame to face Kansas at Allen Fieldhouse.
Basketball fans might not recognize the date, but they’ll know what happened three days earlier.
That day — Jan. 19, 1974 — was the day Phelps and the Irish upset UCLA 71-70 to end the Bruins’ 88-game winning streak.
Kansas women suffer 72-56 home loss to West Virginia
LAWRENCE — It’s a rare occasion for Angel Goodrich to shoot and miss the rim entirely.
On Saturday afternoon at Allen Fieldhouse, Goodrich fired a 3-point shot in the second half with Kansas trailing by 14 points. The shot fell short. Short of the rim, short of the net — short of everything.
The airball represented a second half against West Virginia in which the Jayhawks fell short — way short in their 72-56 loss to the Mountaineers.
“We stunk it up today,” KU coach Bonnie Henrickson said. “There’s no doubt about that.”
Weis handling incident involving KU’s Heeney
Kansas coach Charlie Weis said he is aware of an incident involving linebacker Ben Heeney, the Jayhawks’ leading tackler last season.
“We have discussed this with all of the parties involved and believe we know what truly happened,” Weis said in a statement. “We are handling it internally with appropriate measures.”
The Lawrence Journal-World reported Heeney was cited for misdemeanor battery after an incident Sunday at Tonic, a Lawrence nightclub. Douglas County court records don’t show that Heeney was booked into jail in connection with the incident.
KU announces plans for Rock Chalk Park
Kansas has announced plans to begin construction on a track, soccer and softball facility following approval by the Lawrence City Commission.
KU’s Rock Chalk Park will be located near the intersection of 6th Street and George Williams Way in west Lawrence. The school hopes construction will be completed in time for the 2014 Kansas Relays.
“This will address longstanding needs that we have been trying to fill for well over a decade and probably should have addressed as many as 20 years ago,” KU athletic director Sheahon Zenger said.
Sports complex project in Lawrence moves forward
LAWRENCE — The University of Kansas plans to begin building its part of a large new sports complex in Lawrence, but the city will wait until February to vote on its portion of the project, which will be called Rock Chalk Park.
City commissioners on Tuesday approved rezoning requests and a special-use permit that will allow the university and its private partners to move ahead with plans for a track and field stadium, soccer field, softball stadium and other amenities on about 90 acres in northwest Lawrence.
