Kansas, K-State favored as Big 12 tourney opens

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Kansas State and Kansas tied for the regular-season Big 12 title.

That doesn’t mean they feel very good about themselves entering the league tournament.

The Wildcats lost a road game against Oklahoma State on Saturday, while the Jayhawks were routed by Baylor a few hours later in a game that would have given them the outright title.

Consider it proof that the Big 12 Tournament, which starts Wednesday night at Sprint Center, promises to be among the most intriguing and unpredictable in conference history.

KU women upset No. 22 Oklahoma, 81-71

LAWRENCE — Kansas knows a thing or two about how fragile a big lead can be.

It was only four days before that the Jayhawks came back from a 23-point deficit on the road against TCU. So when KU had a 19-point second-half lead of its own against No. 22 Oklahoma, there would be no letting up from the Jayhawks.

The recent lesson came into to play when the Sooners started notching the pressure up late against KU by forcing turnovers and scoring quick baskets. That’s when Bonnie Henrickson called a timeout to remind her team of the Jayhawks’ previous game.

Kevin Haskin: Mud prevalent in Big 12 arenas

Musings past the mid-week:

■ Going into Big 12 play, the lowest output for Kansas in a basketball victory was 69 points.

■ Over the past four games, the Jayhawks have netted 60, 61, 64 and 59 points.

■ The league is down, which means coaches are going to try hard to muddy it up against KU.

■ The Jayhawks comply sometimes by making their own mud. Travis Releford, for one, can flat defend.

■ Try finding mud anywhere else these days. Walked past a lake, pond, river or stream lately? Sad.

■ Makes me almost want to shovel snow. Almost.

Kevin Haskin: KU again overcomes spirited Bramlage crowd

MANHATTAN — Kansas just seems to find a way.

It was playing in Bramlage Coliseum after all.

Yet the loudest, most hostile arena the Jayhawks play in any time, any season — forget the over-hyped and discontinued series with Missouri — rarely interferes with KU’s success.

This was once the house that Roy rented. Now, it’s the building Bill borrows.

Even with No. 3 Kansas not even close to being at its best Tuesday, it made enough stops to outlast No. 11 Kansas State, 59-55.

Starting five: Key questions entering the Sunflower Showdown

STARTING FIVE

Five questions to start with entering the 275th edition of the Sunflower Showdown, which tips off at 7 p.m. Tuesday in Bramlage Coliseum:

1. Can Travis Releford and Kansas slow Kansas State’s Rodney McGruder?

No player in the Big 12 is more dangerous right now than McGruder, the senior guard who has been named the conference’s top player four times in seven weeks. McGruder has scored in double figures in eight consecutive games and posted 20 or more points in four of those affairs.

Kevin Haskin: Game will evolve for KU’s Ellis

Musings at the mid-week:

■ There have been times this basketball season when impatient Kansas fans wondered how Perry Ellis might look in a Wichita State uniform.

■ Hold off, please, on starting any transfer rumors.

■ The celebrated Wichita freshman played as aggressively against Baylor on Monday as he has all season.

■ “Right now I feel like Perry is trying to take a step as far as what he’s trying to do at Kansas,’’ said teammate Elijah Johnson.

■ Just wait. Shots will start falling and Ellis will become a factor for the Jayhawks. He’s got game.
