KU’s Weis ‘encouraged’ by Heaps’ performance

LAWRENCE — Before we all get too carried away, it’s worth noting that a year ago at Kansas’ spring game, some guy named Dayne Crist looked pretty sharp, too.

Despite numerous similarities, albeit with much more reasonable expectations, Jake Heaps showed he is not Dayne Crist — or as much as he could, anyway, in a meaningless game in April.

That’s not to say Heaps did anything to lessen the hopes that he’ll provide the Jayhawks with some much-needed stability, if not an actual playmaking threat, at quarterback.

KU women turn season around with two NCAA wins

BOULDER, Colo. — The Kansas Jayhawks aren’t about to complain about their No. 12 seeding.

After all, they realize they were likely the last at-large team to make the women’s NCAA Tournament after losing seven of their last 11 games.

They’re eager, however, to prove that they’re not your average 12th seed.

The Jayhawks (20-13) were the ones chanting “Sweet 16!” for the second straight season Monday night after senior Monica Engelman scored a career-high 27 points in a 75-69 upset of fourth-seeded South Carolina.

Withey rejects Hilltoppers’ upset bid

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — You could almost say that Jeff Withey blocked history.

Or you could just say that history was driving down the lane, saw Withey and kicked it out to its teammate that missed the shot at history.

Either way, Western Kentucky was nearly the No. 16 seed that did, but Jeff Withey scored 17 points off 7-of-8 shooting and dragged the Jayhawks across the finish line in their 64-57 win over the Hilltoppers.

“Jeff always bails us out,” forward Kevin Young said. “That’s his job. He’s a senior and he’s a leader. We put everything on his shoulders.”

Camo, neon aren’t college basketball fan favorites

NEW YORK — It seems an unpopular position in college basketball is fashion forward.

The neon-colored jerseys and camouflage-covered shorts debuted by six teams in their postseason conference championships ahead of the NCAA men’s basketball tournaments weren’t well received in the press or social media, with critics particularly targeting UCLA, Kansas and Notre Dame because of the schools’ tradition-rich athletic histories. Louisville, Cincinnati and Baylor also got uniform makeovers from Adidas, and they didn’t go over so well, either.

KU women make NCAA Tournament as No. 12 seed

LAWRENCE — Carolyn Davis leaned forward and then back. Fellow senior Angel Goodrich sat beside her perched forward the entire time with her hands crossed together as platform for her chin to rest on.

The two were in the second of three rows of Kansas players waiting to see what their future held. Would they make the NCAA Tournament?

The first teams were announced at 6:04 p.m., and knees began to bounce and feet began to twitch left and right, as the Jayhawks grew increasingly anxious to see their name.

Ellis the best of KU’s bigs vs. Baylor

WACO, Texas – Bill Self called Perry Ellis the best player on the floor for Kansas on Saturday, which was both a compliment and an indictment.

Ellis, a freshman forward from Wichita, scored 12 points and went 5-for-7 from the floor in KU’s 81-58 loss at Baylor. The Jayhawks needed him, too, after starter Kevin Young picked up two fouls in the first four minutes.

“He was aggressive,” Self said. “He attacked them. The guys he was scoring on or over or around were legitimate shot blockers that were much bigger.”

Top 25 in turmoil as ranked teams drop games

Wisconsin’s tying half-court heave went in, of course. Then Kansas lost again. And in case you were asleep late Saturday night, Notre Dame rallied past Louisville in five overtimes.

March Madness is weeks away, but February Frenzy is already in full swing.

Six more Top 25 teams went down Saturday, including two of the top five. When the next Associated Press poll comes out Monday, it likely will have a new No. 1 for the sixth straight week — marking the second-longest such streak since the first rankings in 1949.

Kansas women suffer 72-56 home loss to West Virginia

LAWRENCE — It’s a rare occasion for Angel Goodrich to shoot and miss the rim entirely.

On Saturday afternoon at Allen Fieldhouse, Goodrich fired a 3-point shot in the second half with Kansas trailing by 14 points. The shot fell short. Short of the rim, short of the net — short of everything.

The airball represented a second half against West Virginia in which the Jayhawks fell short — way short in their 72-56 loss to the Mountaineers.

“We stunk it up today,” KU coach Bonnie Henrickson said. “There’s no doubt about that.”

TCU fulfills dream with historic upset of KU

FORT WORTH, Texas — Garlon Green dreamed of a victory over Kansas long before he played for TCU.

It’s hard to think that the Horned Frogs senior forward or anyone else could have ever imagined his dream being fulfilled like this. The fifth-ranked Jayhawks certainly didn’t.

Big 12 newcomer TCU was still looking for its first conference victory and there were some who wondered if the Frogs, who have lost three key players to season-ending injuries, could become the first team to go winless in the league.

Sports complex project in Lawrence moves forward

LAWRENCE — The University of Kansas plans to begin building its part of a large new sports complex in Lawrence, but the city will wait until February to vote on its portion of the project, which will be called Rock Chalk Park.

City commissioners on Tuesday approved rezoning requests and a special-use permit that will allow the university and its private partners to move ahead with plans for a track and field stadium, soccer field, softball stadium and other amenities on about 90 acres in northwest Lawrence.
