Jayhawks fallen

NCAA Tournament: KansasJayhawks lose to Michigan in Sweet Sixteen of NCAA Tournament Dylan Gehlbach And that’s the toughest part about the NCAA Tournament. In almost every tournament game, no matter how well (or poorly) a team has played in the game so far, every team has the opportunity to win it or lose it in the final two minutes. As the Kansas Men’s Basketball team returns to Lawrence while the Michigan Wolverines are defeating the Florida Gators, cementing their spot in the Final Four, it shows just how much of a difference those final two minutes can make. The Jayhawks were playing one of their best games of the year against Michigan in the Sweet Sixteen Friday…. Continue reading

Jayhawks will shine in Dallas

NCAA Tournament: KansasKansas is built for weekends and matchups like these By Andrew Curtis Kansas is one third of the way to making the dream real by cutting down the nets and winning a national title in Atlanta. Two down, four to go. After two wins in the opening rounds of the NCAA Tournament in Kansas City, the Jayhawks have been far from stellar. Three of the four halves have been extremely underwhelming compared to the benchmark this team set in the regular season. But all that matters is that they got the wins. Survive and advance. The guard play was atrocious throughout the entire first game against Western Kentucky, with the Jayhawks committing turnovers left and… Continue reading

Kansas Poised for Deep Tournament Run

1fjDXE.St.81Jayhawks are playing some of the best basketball in the country By Andrew Curtis Success is learned through failure. This is especially true for the 2012-2013 Kansas basketball team. In circumstances not seen since the Bush administration, KU managed to lose an unfathomable three games in a row in early February. Since then, a beast has awoken. Kansas has won its last seven games by an average of 21 points. Granted, five of those games have been at home, but one of them completed a sweep over the team that’s tied for first place with KU atop the Big 12 (for now), Kansas State. Kansas State faces a stiff road test Saturday at Gallagher-Iba Arena… Continue reading

Blue bloods prepare for Final Four

Final Four 2013 logoMarch Madness is here By Josh Kurelac The 2012-2013 men’s college basketball season has been filled with parody.  The inconsistent play of basketball teams throughout the country has coaches, players, expert analysts and fans scratching their heads.  As March begins, it’s time for teams to start playing their best basketball of the year.  At the end of this month, four teams will advance to the Final Four in Atlanta, Ga.  Here’s three teams that have a legitimate chance to attain that goal. Indiana Hoosiers (24-4) (12-3 Big Ten) College basketball’s most talented team, Indiana, leads the Big Ten, which is the nation’s toughest conference.  The Hoosiers started the year by winning 15 of 16 games, before losing to Wisconsin 64-59 in… Continue reading

Number 15 Will Go Down in History

chalmersMario Chalmers’ jersey was retired halftime at the Texas-Kansas game Saturday By Josh Kurelac The University of Kansas retired Mario Chalmers’ jersey on Saturday, Feb. 16, at halftime of the Texas versus Kansas men’s basketball game.  The ceremony commemorated Chalmers for his accomplishments during his three-year career at KU. Chalmers, a Mcdonald’s All-American and Parade All-American in 2005, was a top recruit coming out of Bartlett High School in Anchorage, Alaska.  He didn’t waste any time introducing himself to the Jayhawk faithful, scoring 15 points against Idaho State in his first game as a Jayhawk.  Chalmers made an immediate impact as a freshman for Head Coach Bill Self.  He averaged 11.5 points per game, 3.8 assists per game and 2.7 steals… Continue reading

Withey’s Draft Stock Rising

bear caveLaid back senior leads by example By Andrew Curtis Kansas has long been considered ‘Big Man U’. Even with the recent departure of Danny Manning, the man that received most of the credit for the nickname, the position remains extremely well-coached. The player who is seeing the most benefits from this is senior 7-footer Jeff Withey. Withey has improved as much in a 4-year span as any player I have ever seen. He was so awkwardly tentative and fragile as a freshman that it was hard to see him ever having an impact on the court for the Jayhawks. Thanks to a couple years of grueling praticices with fellow post players and current members of… Continue reading

The Quest for Nine Straight

bear caveAt Kansas, players change, but expectations always stay the same By Andrew Curtis Ah, free at last, free at last. We can finally say we’re free at last. Basketball season has arrived. In what seems like much longer than seven months, Bill Self lost his two leading scorers from the overachieving national runner-up team from a year ago. Combining with a strong nucleus of veterans is a class of seven freshmen. It’s an interesting makeup for a historically dominant program like Kansas, one that is unique and will help this team to have a higher ceiling than last year. Coach Self has had no problem filling out the roster in an effort to replace two… Continue reading

Calipari Learns From Mistakes, Earns Championship

By Blake Schuster New Orleans, La. — It was happening again. Down by nine, to John Calipari and against a seemingly unbeatable team, Kansas made its run.  But in the Jayhawks 67-59 national championship loss to Kentucky, it wasn’t a miracle Jayhawk comeback as it was in 2008 — although it felt similar — this time was about Calipari, and the demons he finally exorcised. Four years ago with Calipari’s Memphis team up nine with 2:12 left to play, Bill Self pulled out one of the sweetest wins of his career, downing the Tigers in overtime. This time Calipari’s Kentucky team took the lead early in the first half and never gave it up despite… Continue reading
