Kevin Haskin: Rebuilding Jayhawks head to Big 12 tourney

LAWRENCE — The Kansas golf team could not go into the Big 12 Golf Championships with much greater momentum.

The Jayhawks are coming off their first team title since 2010 after claiming the Hawkeye Invitational earlier this month in Iowa City, Iowa.

That breakthrough, however, was nothing first-year coach Jamie Bermel championed as an immediate goal.

KU women turn season around with two NCAA wins

BOULDER, Colo. — The Kansas Jayhawks aren’t about to complain about their No. 12 seeding.

After all, they realize they were likely the last at-large team to make the women’s NCAA Tournament after losing seven of their last 11 games.

They’re eager, however, to prove that they’re not your average 12th seed.

The Jayhawks (20-13) were the ones chanting “Sweet 16!” for the second straight season Monday night after senior Monica Engelman scored a career-high 27 points in a 75-69 upset of fourth-seeded South Carolina.

12th-seeded Kansas women whip Colorado in NCAA Tournament opener

BOULDER, Colo. — The Kansas Jayhawks still have Colorado’s number.

Angel Goodrich and Carolyn Davis each scored 14 points and the 12th-seeded Jayhawks upset their former conference foe and fifth-seeded Buffaloes 67-52 Saturday night on Colorado’s home floor.

The number the Jayhawks swear they aren’t the least bit concerned with is their seeding.

So, no, they don’t feel slighted that the selection committee made them a 12.

After all, they lost five of their last seven coming into the tournament: “We lost a lot of games down the stretch,” Davis said.

KU women make NCAA Tournament as No. 12 seed

LAWRENCE — Carolyn Davis leaned forward and then back. Fellow senior Angel Goodrich sat beside her perched forward the entire time with her hands crossed together as platform for her chin to rest on.

The two were in the second of three rows of Kansas players waiting to see what their future held. Would they make the NCAA Tournament?

The first teams were announced at 6:04 p.m., and knees began to bounce and feet began to twitch left and right, as the Jayhawks grew increasingly anxious to see their name.

Kevin Haskin: Big 12 meetings could be tame

Musings at the mid-week:
■ Do not expect expansion to come to fruition this week at the Big 12 spring meetings.
■ Could be that the gathering in Kansas City is rather tame for once, complete with a deserving salute to interim commissioner Chuck Nei… Continue reading
