KU’s Henrickson hires Air Force vet as assistant

HENRICKSON HIRES AIR FORCE VET AS ASSISTANT: Bonnie Henrickson and the Kansas women’s basketball team announced the hiring of assistant coach Shay Robinson on Sunday. Robinson, replaces Terry Nooner, who took a similar position at Alabama.

Robinson, an Air Force veteran, spent the last two seasons as an assistant coach at the Air Force Academy after serving eight years of active duty in the military.

KU freshman Ellis explodes for career-high 23 points

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — With four minutes and forty seconds left in Perry Ellis’ career game, Naadir Tharpe looked to throw an entry pass to his smoldering hot freshman.

But the freshman was wise enough to know it wouldn’t end well.

“No, no , no,” Ellis yelled.

Tharpe obliged and swung the ball to Travis Releford on the wing. A few seconds later, Tharpe was in the same situation. But this time Ellis had position and Tharpe had a passing lane.

LAWRENCE — On Jan. 22, 1974, Digger Phelps brought No. 1-ranked Notre Dame to face Kansas at Allen Fieldhouse.

Basketball fans might not recognize the date, but they’ll know what happened three days earlier.

That day — Jan. 19, 1974 — was the day Phelps and the Irish upset UCLA 71-70 to end the Bruins’ 88-game winning streak.

Releford credits KU scouting for stopping K-State star

MANHATTAN — If Kansas’ guard Travis Releford was studying for a test on Kansas State guard Rodney McGruder, he passed with flying colors.

Releford chased Rodney McGruder for the majority of the game, holding the hot-handed senior in check for two points in the first half.

“Starting off the first half I thought I did real well at making him uncomfortable and not letting him get easy looks at the rim,” Releford said.
